Hartselle High School Student Wins Go Build Alabama’s Future Skilled Workers of America Award for December

ACRI commends Dillan Martin for his commitment to the construction industry

Montgomery, Ala.  – December 18, 2014 – Go Build Alabama, an initiative of the Alabama Construction Recruitment Institute (ACRI), awarded Dillan Martin with the Go Build Alabama Future Skilled Workers of America (FSWA) Award for the month of December.

Dillan MartinDillan Martin, a junior at Hartselle High School, takes dual enrollment classes through Calhoun Community College in welding. In the summer, Martin takes dual enrollment classes through Wallace State College. After graduating from high school, Martin plans to attend Wallace State College or Calhoun Community College to continue his training in welding and in the automotive program.

The FSWA Award, which honors one high school junior or senior each month, was created to recognize and encourage high school students who plan to pursue careers in the construction industry. Each student that wins the award is eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship to a training facility in Alabama if the student chooses to continue his or her education in the skilled trades in the state. The scholarship is made possible by ACRI and the Big Dog Poker Run, an employee motorcycle ride sponsored by CraneWorks and Garrison Steel held each spring.

Teachers, principals and other school personnel are encouraged to nominate students for the Go Build Alabama Future Skilled Workers of America Award. To be eligible, students must be high school juniors or seniors who have demonstrated interest in construction careers. They must also be enrolled in or have been enrolled in technical courses related to the skilled labor industry, and have plans to continue their education in the construction industry upon graduating from high school. ACRI launched the Go Build campaign in August of 2010 in effort to prepare for the anticipated shortage as older tradesmen leave the workforce. One third of all skilled tradesmen in the construction industry are over the age of 50. With their retirement on the horizon, training programs are not producing enough young workers to replace those exiting the industry. The Go Build campaign aims to recruit the next generation of skilled construction trade workers.
